Abstract

Cosmetic products often require the use of preservatives to maintain their stability and prevent microbial contamination. While synthetic preservatives are effective, they may pose health risks such as allergies, irritation, and long-term toxicity. This has led to a growing interest in natural preservatives, especially in herbal cosmetics. This review explores the benefits and drawbacks of commonly used herbal preservatives like lemon oil, neem, honey, turmeric, and aloe vera. These natural agents possess antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and skin- conditioning properties, making them valuable in cosmetic formulations. However, despite their advantages, some herbal preservatives may cause allergic reactions, organ toxicity, or interactions with medications if used improperly or in excess. A careful evaluation of their pharmacological effects, safety profiles, and toxicological data is necessary to promote their safe and effective use in cosmetic products. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current understanding of herbal preservatives, focusing on their biological properties, applications, and limitations.
