Abstract

Celiac disease is identified by injury to mucosa of small intestine, triggered by gluten and can be characterised by malabsorption of nutrients in the susceptible individuals. It is supposed to be a common auto-immune disorder affecting almost every part of the world population. The strict withdrawal of gluten from diet has been considered to be the only treatment. Earlier it was thought to be more common in young children leading to ignorance of the fact that this may result into severe condition when these children grow older. Even in India it has been there for a long time, maily observed in the northern population. Lack of knowledge and awareness leads to improper diagnosis and treatment failure in many parts of the world.
